PERSONALITY

One thing to note about Kit Myers is that he does his best to remain apathetic. Due to his blood magic and the path it could lead him down, he must remain detached from the world at large and not allow himself to be overwhelmed with strong emotions. Much of his magic comes from that, and any outburst could cause his magic to bubble up from inside of him and hurt him from the inside out. If his magic corrupts, then he loses himself in it and stops being Kit. Instead, he becomes something unrecognisable, something so reliant and distorted by the magic that it’s all he becomes. Power would be all he wanted, and he would do anything in order to achieve the goal of becoming powerful. Due to this, he detaches himself from situations around him and refuses to let himself care.

This, however, has become undone by Elliot. Since meeting him at sixteen, Kit has found himself relying on the other too much, caring about him too much and becoming jarred whenever Elliot lands himself in a situation that could harm him. It makes Kit worry, it makes him care in a way that he knows he shouldn’t but can’t help, because who can really control their emotions enough to block them out completely? Although he has had years of practice of making himself come off as lacking in emotions, something inside of him still reaches out in order to care. Elliot pulled out this part of him, wiggled his way into Kit’s heart and made him feel again. Sometimes Kit hates it, despises the way that Elliot has ruined years of hard work and hates the other for doing it, but a lot of the time he cares too much about him to be angry about it.

This disconnection he’s tried to encourage in himself makes him apathetic to the world at large. Someone could be being mugged in front of him and he probably wouldn’t raise a hand to help. His morals are skewed due to his desire to remain passive to the world.

These skewed morals make him come off as somewhat selfish. It seems that the only thing he cares about is making sure that he remains impassive and uncaring, and so the only thing he cares about is himself. Others don’t matter to him as much as his own worries do. The only exception is Elliot, and a few other friends he made whilst in school and after it thanks to the former.

Still, he knows for sure that if something were to happen to Elliot, he wouldn’t care about what would happen with his magic and his own being – he would use everything in his power to help him if it was a dire enough situation that he knows the other would not be able to get out of himself. It’s a side of himself that he doesn’t like showing; one that he manages to hide most of the time, only enhancing his selfish image, but he doesn’t quite care about how he comes off. Kit knows what he’s actually like, and so do his friends, and thus Kit can safely say that self-image isn’t something he obsesses over like some other people do.

It takes a lot to set Kit off. He doesn’t anger easily, nor does he upset. It would take something huge to cause him to lose control of himself, and so he has a large amount of self-control. People don’t push his buttons. In fact, they don’t really register with him. Instead, everyone is like a side character in the movie of his life, with only few others becoming secondary protagonists that he would bother with.

Overall, Kit is actually very, very scared of what could happen to him if he loses control of this self-imposed apathy that he has worked so hard to cultivate. Deep down, he actually cares a lot, but it takes too much for this to show through and only few people have managed to dig this up out of him. Indeed, he’s still young, scared, and makes mistakes when he shouldn’t, though he doesn’t let this fear show through. It’s only his frantic attempts to find answers to his issues that show how worried he is about his powers, how much he wants to be able to let go of the tight control and be himself again – the bright child that he was before his parents ruined him, and before he ruined himself.

HISTORYKit comes from a family of Unnatural magic users and, through their own work and the influence of the rest of the family, they have all managed to become corrupted in some way. Whilst it wasn't an unhappy existence, the fact that his parents - Joanne and Bradley Myers - were both corrupted too means that their influence over him and his budding magic was great. Their focus on their own magic, and wanting their son to follow in their footsteps, meant that it seemed as though they only wanted him for what he could offer. This felt greater, later on in his life when he realised he could use his blood magic to enhance other magics, such as his own terrakinesis.

Most of his time before attending the Johannesburg Collective was spent trying to avoid his family - mostly when they were practising their magic - with little luck escaping from their clutches. They wanted to get in early whilst they could still influence him, confident in the fact that he would follow in their footsteps and have magic, for it to become corrupted before he even knew what kind of magic he possessed.

eleven. Kit attended a usual public school before his powers began to manifest. A school yard fight between him and a group of other boys caused his terrakinesis to kick in, the ground rumbling and small pieces of rock flying up to hit the other boys. It started small, and it took him a moment to realise what it was that he had done. However, when he did, he was horrified - a humane power, or just any magic. His parents were right to hope he would be the same as them, and this gave them more reason to attempt to influence him, to bring him into the family fold of having corrupted magic, sure that he would have some unnatural powers like them.

Despite this, life didn't change much for him. Though he transferred schools, he kept to himself and, in the quiet, trained himself into apathy - an attempt to remove himself from the temptation of corruption and staying with the normal magic that he possessed, to stay himself rather than doing as his parents wanted him to. They didn't notice it, too focused on training their own magic and the fact that his had finally come through, which was an advantage to him in the end.

thirteen. recruited to jbc, johannesburg collective. This is an escape from his family and a chance for him to finally have control over his own magic, to decide what he wanted to do with it and whether or not he wanted to fall into corruption (which he definitely did not) or fight it as much as he could. In this, he obviously chose the latter, and spends much of his time honing and practising his magic in the hopes that he will be able to fight any corruption himself. In this, he thinks himself successful, but only due to the fact that his main line has remained unidentified.

fourteen. line identified, knowledge of blood magic ability - and thus unnatural line - established. Fear of becoming like his family increased.

sixteen. Meets Elliot by way of a fist fight. It began with Kit punching Elliot and causing his nose to bleed, and ended in Kit almost having his spleen punctured by a well placed knife, only to be saved by another student named Ezra. However, once Elliot realised the troubles Kit was going through, despite their previous dislike of each other, he decides to help Kit in an attempt to stop the corruption constantly eating away at his magic and his very being - much to Kit's annoyance, considering he can barely stand the other magician. However, over time and due to stubbornness, he finds himself becoming fond of the other, and thus a friendship is struck up between them.

seventeenAfter Elliot's suicide attempt, Kit stuck to the boy like glue. Although he doesn't know exactly what happened and what caused him to take himself to Ezra and, after that, the hospital, finding out about it nearly caused him to feel something. It was dangerous, for his magic. Emotions are the power of their magic, and easy to fall into and thus into what he has been spending his life avoiding.

He is taken by Elliot to try and counteract the corruption that's already establishing itself, though it is mostly unsuccessful. Corruption is too easy to fall into and too difficult to fall out of. Despite this, he enjoys spending time with Elliot and learning about different magics, and continuing to practice his own, unnatural and natural magic both. Throughout his whole schooling, Kit did not return home unless it was required of him. Being as far away from his family as possible, and their demands for him to use his magic and fall into it like they had, were too much for him. If he had returned home for too long, he felt that he would eventually have fallen into the same habits they did - something he was actively trying to avoid.

eighteen. To graduate from the Johannesburg Collective, the students take a sludgy, black liquid that nerfs the students' powers, leaves them in a drugged-like state and are dropped into the middle of a forest. In there, they are meant to kill as many monsters and spooks as possible, taking trophies as an example of their accomplishments and work together to stay alive within the forest.

Whilst Kit managed to find a group to work with, he spent most of his time at the side or back, leaving some of the work to the others whilst doing his own thing to make sure that he would be able to graduate at a passable level. Considering he didn't ruin the group by doing this, they continued to let him travel with them, each finding their own trophies and celebrating each kill. Whilst it was difficult to make it out of the forest, Kit found it passed quickly enough despite the difficulty of it. The agreement between him and the group made it easier, especially considering he preferred to stay out of their way and work on his own, rather than attempting to work with strangers.

After making it out of the forest, Kit graduated at mid-level. Not quite the top of the class, but not at the bottom of it either, and that was acceptable to him. The fact that he didn't work with others but still managed to kill enough monsters was satisfying, and placed him at a level that he wasn't going to complain about any time soon.

nineteen/twenty. During this year, Kit spent most of his time travelling around, exploring different caves and enhancing his terrakinesis through the use of blood magic. Whilst using the blood magic increased his chances of falling 'dark side', it helped for when he explored these caves whenever he hit a difficulty or somewhere he couldn't get through. It was an easier time than he had at the school, and whilst he wasn't living a glamorous life or gaining riches, he was happy enough with what he was doing.

twenty/twenty one. This time he spends a lot of travelling outside of caves, around Europe and America, occasionally dropping in to bug Elliot whilst he's doing his usual "your family member is contacting you" bullshit.

twenty-two. The corruption is getting easier to fall into, especially with his increased use of blood magic. Through this, Kit decides that maybe talking to someone about it would be better. At this point, his contact with his family has decreased, but that doesn't change the influence that using blood magic has on him. He travels to various magic experts and witch doctors, sometimes being dragged around by Elliot to where he thinks there will be a solution and sometimes just by himself (thouh frequently the former) to see what they have to say about the influence of the Unnatural line and any way he can step away from the changes that his magic has been going through.

They don't have much good to say, outside of blocking that side of his magic or limitation spells they could cast. Both of these are short term aids to the problem, and Kit barely sees any point in it. He doesn't want to block his magic, and the limitation spells wouldn't do much to help outside of prolonging the effect. In the end, he becomes resigned to his fate and decides to try and use less blood magic, merely using it to carry on enhancing his terrakinesis. It's all he can see to do.

twenty three/four. In an effort to become less reliant on magic, he tries to fit in to normal society. Since his travels took him to so many different places, he figured there was no point in giving it up and, through this, got a job in travel writing. It doesn't pay extremely well but the magazine is big enough that he can take himself around the world enough to see the sights and contact other witches about his issues. It isn't much, but it's a job, one he finds himself reluctantly enjoying, so it isn't something he plans to change any time soon.

The biggest part of the year was being dragged to Italy with Elliot, where the idiot managed to get himself in some trouble. He pick-pocketed a mafia's son - Dante. This was bad.

Instead of letting him stay to help, Elliot sent Kit away - and despite his protests and wanting to stay, Elliot convinced him it would be better for him to leave, and so Kit reluctantly fled. There wasn't much he could do with his magic, and although he wanted to have his friend's back, he was useless (or felt so) and would probably have just ended up getting himself killed.

twenty-five. Once Kit near enough beats up Elliot for being an idiot and worrying him to pieces after being possessed, his travels continue as Elliot recovers, stopping by frequently just to ensure that he still is okay. This sometimes ends with him staying in London for weeks at a time, hovering around the other magician just in case he does something stupid again. Otherwise, life continues on as normal, with Kit carrying on his job in journalism and attempting to find answers that he is slowly becoming convinced don't exist.
